Composed in 1894 for the clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld, Brahms' first sonata for solo clarinet has become a standard part of the repretoire for clarinet. Muhlfeld was an inspiration to Brahms, who had given up composing in 1890. The work was later arranged by Brahms for performance by viola in place of the clarinet. This edition is based on original publications of the viola edition, which includes a number of transpositions from the original clarinet version to adapt to the different tonal qualities of the viola as well as additional ornamentation available using the viola.
